Toast has documented Toast Fuel, a mode on its Retail platform that connects a store’s indoor point of sale to its outdoor fuel dispensers. The company announced the product on September 29.
What happened
According to Toast’s support documentation, staff can authorize pumps, manage prepays, accept fleet cards and handle fuel transactions in the same system they use for retail and food sales. Supported workflows include prepay, refunds, price differentiation, pump stacking, pump transfers, and contact and contactless card payment at the dispenser.
The product targets independent, unbranded fuel operators, most commonly those that also run a convenience store or foodservice counter. Sites must operate independently of major oil brands. Toast says it currently supports Wayne dispensers with iXPay 1 or iXPay 2 payment terminals. Support for Gilbarco dispensers, PIN debit at the pump and additional fleet card programs is planned for future releases.
Why it matters
A convenience store that sells fuel, coffee and groceries often runs the pump and the counter on separate systems. Toast’s documentation describes one system for both, so a prepay taken at the counter and the dispenser it authorizes sit in the same record.
Our read
The rollout rules show where the product stops. Branded oil sites are out of scope, one dispenser maker is supported today, and installation runs through a partner after a site survey. Toast’s roadmap names Gilbarco dispensers, PIN debit and more fleet card programs as the next additions. The move fits a broader pattern of payments arriving inside operating software, which we covered in our piece on BMO and Mastercard embedding virtual card payments and in Stripe’s agreement to acquire Parafin.
