BMO and Mastercard said on October 1 that eligible BMO Corporate Card clients can now start and manage virtual card payments from inside the enterprise software they already use.
What was announced
The BMO announcement says the capability is available for eligible clients in Canada and the United States. Clients can pay supplier invoices, travel and corporate expenses with BMO Commercial virtual cards without leaving their operating workflows. BMO says it is the first Mastercard issuer in Canada to offer an integrated embedded finance and payment experience by virtual card within participating platform integrations.
The integration runs through Mastercard’s Commercial Express framework. BMO describes it as a standardized way for participating platforms to enable issuer-backed virtual card payments, with less implementation work for each platform.
Why it matters
The release describes company payment workflows as fragmented across separate systems, with manual steps and disconnected banking portals. Treasury, procurement and accounts payable teams can initiate, approve and reconcile virtual card transactions inside existing platform screens,. Seth Blacher, Head of TPS Product Management and Payments Modernization at BMO, said the partnership removes “the friction between finance software and payment execution”.
Our read
This part is our analysis. A standard integration framework shifts the question for a software platform from which bank to build for to which issuers connect through the framework. That is the same pattern we described in our coverage of Stripe’s pending Parafin deal, where a platform layer supplies financial products to the software its customers already run. For the corporate-treasury angle, see our note on Bank of America’s RTP volume.
Finance leaders who use an ERP or travel platform can ask their vendor and card issuer two things: whether the platform participates in the framework, and which approval and reconciliation steps move inside the software. The release leaves both unanswered.
