Synchrony, the store-card and consumer financing company behind private-label cards for retailers like Amazon and Lowe’s, has struck an enterprise collaboration with OpenAI to build its financing, rewards and loyalty products directly into ChatGPT. A Synchrony plugin is now live in ChatGPT’s plugin directory, letting shoppers browse promotional financing offers and partner deals from inside a conversation rather than a merchant’s own checkout flow. Separately, Synchrony will deploy OpenAI’s latest models across its own operations to speed product development.

The deal matters because Synchrony is not a card network or a bank with its own consumer app people open daily. Its financing offers have always lived inside someone else’s storefront, embedded at the point of sale. Moving that same embedding logic into a chat interface is a bet that agentic shopping assistants become another storefront Synchrony needs a presence inside of, rather than a channel it can afford to sit out.

“This collaboration with OpenAI marks a major milestone for Synchrony, our millions of customers and hundreds of thousands of partner locations,” said Maran Nalluswami, Synchrony’s EVP and chief strategy and business development officer, in the companies’ announcement.

The original insight: this is the financing side of the agentic commerce buildout that card networks have been racing to standardize, visible in the Agentic Payments Alliance Visa, Mastercard and Rain launched this week. Networks are writing the rules for how an AI agent authorizes a purchase; Synchrony is making sure that once it does, a financing offer is sitting there to be taken, the same embedded-finance instinct already reshaping products like prepaid cards turning into full digital banks. Whoever gets embedded into the agent’s decision path first, not just the checkout page, is likely to keep that position once agentic shopping actually scales.
