Business banking’s remaining branch dependency keeps shrinking. US Bank launched Enhanced Payments on July 8, a bundled money-movement product built into its online banking dashboard and mobile app that gives small business customers same-day ACH, domestic wire, and instant payment options without a branch visit, including international wires that previously required in-person processing.
The pricing model favors volume: a 25 dollar monthly subscription drops the cost of a domestic wire to 16 dollars per transaction, compared with 30 dollars for non-subscribers, alongside discounted rates across the other payment types bundled into the product. Shruti Patel, Chief Product Officer for Business Banking at US Bank, said the goal is to help clients “move money quickly and conveniently” by putting advanced money movement capabilities directly inside the online banking experience businesses already use.
Why it matters: this is a bank competing with fintech payment platforms on their own terms, packaging speed and digital access as a subscription rather than treating instant and international payments as premium, branch-mediated services. Enhanced Payments also ships with transaction limits and decision-support tools aimed specifically at growing small businesses, the segment most likely to outgrow a basic business checking account but not yet large enough for a dedicated treasury team.
The original insight: bundling same-day ACH, wires, and instant payments into one subscription, rather than pricing each rail separately, mirrors how real-time payments adoption among commercial users has been accelerating, and suggests incumbent banks now see payment speed itself, not just the underlying rail, as the product small businesses are willing to pay a subscription for.
