Stripe announced on December 2, 2025, that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Metronome, a usage-based billing orchestration platform, for approximately one billion dollars. The acquisition strengthens Stripe Billing’s capabilities for metered and consumption-based pricing, the dominant business model for AI and cloud infrastructure companies.

Metronome provides metering and billing infrastructure for complex, data-driven monetization systems. Its customer base includes OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA, three of the most significant AI infrastructure companies currently operating. The platform handles the technically challenging problem of tracking usage across millions of API calls, compute hours, or token generations and translating that usage into accurate invoices.

Patrick Collison, Stripe co-founder and CEO, framed the acquisition in structural terms: “Metered pricing is the native business model for the AI era. The associated shift in how businesses generate revenue will be as big as the advent of SaaS.” The statement positions Metronome’s metering engine as foundational infrastructure rather than a niche billing tool.

Scott Woody, CEO of Metronome, described the combined vision: “Together, we’re building foundational monetization infrastructure for next-generation software: flexible, data-driven systems supporting startups to enterprises.”

Stripe plans to integrate Metronome’s metering engine directly into the Stripe Billing platform, creating a unified solution for usage-based billing across Stripe’s existing customer base. The acquisition was completed on January 14, 2026. For Stripe, whose 2025 revenue grew 28 percent and whose valuation increased 158 percent from its last funding round, the Metronome deal represents a bet that AI-era billing infrastructure will be as foundational as the payment processing layer Stripe built over the past decade.
