A new Pittsburgh bank in formation, Sagehaven Bancorp, plans to serve business and consumer clients nationwide from a single physical branch, betting its technology stack rather than a footprint of locations on winning national reach.
What Happened
Sagehaven, which would be the Pittsburgh region’s first startup de novo bank in nearly 20 years, has selected core banking vendor Nymbus to power cloud-native processing, account opening, digital banking and managed services for the proposed national bank. Founders Brian Tabb, Angelo Innamorato and Jared Leland, veterans of BNY, Huntington National Bank and corporate finance law, filed a charter application with the OCC and FDIC in July 2026 and are targeting an April 2027 launch, pending regulatory review and a capital raise. The bank plans to serve small-to-mid market companies and high-net-worth consumers from its single Strip District location while reaching customers nationwide digitally.
Why It Matters
Sagehaven is the latest entrant in a bank charter pipeline regulators have been actively clearing this year, after years of a near-total drought in new national bank approvals (The US Bank Charter Drought Is Officially Over), helped along by a faster two-phase FDIC review process introduced in August (FDIC Splits Bank Approval Into a Faster Two-Phase Process). What distinguishes Sagehaven from most of that pipeline is the single-branch model: it is applying for a full national bank charter while explicitly building its physical footprint for one market and its distribution for fifty.
The Original Insight
The single-branch, nationwide-digital structure is a direct bet that regulators will keep approving charters for banks whose primary infrastructure is a cloud core rather than a branch network, a bet that would have looked far riskier before this year’s approvals accelerated. If it works, Sagehaven becomes a template other regional teams can copy: file for a full charter, build one branch to satisfy community presence expectations, and let the core banking platform carry national reach. “Nymbus gives us the speed, flexibility, oversight, and digital framework to efficiently and securely serve businesses and individuals nationally in our tech-centric world,” said Brian Tabb, Sagehaven’s president and chief executive.
