BNP Paribas and Google Cloud announced a five-year partnership on September 24 to expand the bank’s access to Google Cloud’s AI-optimized infrastructure, Gemini models and Gemini Enterprise as it moves further into agentic AI. The initial deployments sit inside Corporate & Institutional Banking, including AI agents that help prepare corporate credit memos, with planned extensions into sales, trading, research and structuring. Gemini models will also be folded into LLM@CIB, BNP Paribas’ generative AI assistant already available to more than 65,000 employees. “Agentic AI marks a critical shift in how global financial institutions streamline operations, assess risk, and serve their clients,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO at Google Cloud.
The deal matters less for the cloud spend than for where BNP Paribas is choosing to put agents first: corporate credit memo preparation, a document-heavy, judgment-adjacent workflow that sits upstream of a lending decision rather than inside customer-facing banking. Charles Holive, Chief AI Officer at BNP Paribas CIB, said the bank’s approach “starts with the business need,” assessing “which technology is best suited to each use case” within existing security and governance controls. FinTech Edition has tracked Google Cloud’s push to make Gemini Enterprise the default agentic layer for financial institutions this year, and BNP Paribas is now one of its largest European proof points.
The original insight: BNP Paribas explicitly frames this as multi-cloud and multi-vendor, not an exclusive Google bet. Group CIO Marc Camus said the bank’s “multi-cloud and multi-model approach gives us the flexibility to select, for each case, the right model, infrastructure and level of control.” As FinTech Edition has reported elsewhere in the AI-agent banking buildout, large banks are deliberately avoiding single-vendor lock-in on agentic infrastructure, treating model and cloud choice as a risk-management decision as much as a technology one.
