Remittance platforms built their businesses on correspondent banking rails that are slow and expensive by design, and the fix increasingly on offer is stablecoin settlement running invisibly underneath an app customers never notice has changed. LemFi, which serves roughly 2 million customers moving money between the UK, Europe, Australia and North America and recipients across Africa, Asia and Latin America, has partnered with stablecoin payments infrastructure provider BVNK to move its cross-border settlement onto BVNK’s regulated rails. BVNK holds more than 25 licenses across the UK, Europe and the US and operates in over 130 countries; the rollout proceeds market by market, gated on local central bank and regulatory approval rather than launching everywhere at once.

The mechanism is deliberately hidden from the end user. Customers send and receive local currency exactly as before; stablecoins move the value between markets in the background, without a customer ever holding a crypto balance. “We’re rebuilding those rails. Stablecoins let us settle near instantly,” LemFi CEO Ridwan Olalere said of the shift. BVNK’s Chris Harmse framed the stakes in human terms: “Remittances are one of the clearest places that shift changes lives” for diaspora communities sending money home.

Why it matters: the World Bank put the global average cost of sending a remittance at 6.36% in the third quarter of 2025, more than double the United Nations’ 2030 target of 3%, a gap worth roughly $20 billion a year in fees. With stablecoin payment volume already running at $7.4 trillion over the past 12 months, and projections pointing toward stablecoins moving from around 3% to as much as 20% of cross-border payments within a decade, LemFi’s move operationalizes the settlement strategy it set out in May, when Tether took a strategic stake in the company.

The original insight here is the invisibility itself: LemFi and BVNK are betting that stablecoin adoption in remittances succeeds precisely by not asking users to understand or trust crypto at all, a wager other platforms weighing stablecoin settlement infrastructure will be watching closely.
