American Express is assembling a small business bank in every respect but the name it puts on the product. The company launched a high-yield Business Savings account and, alongside it, laid out a roadmap that pulls checking, savings, payroll and card rewards into a single connected banking stack.
Business Savings offers a 2.95% annual percentage yield with no minimum balance and no monthly maintenance fees, and customers can now apply for Business Checking and Business Savings together in one application, with both now grouped under a new American Express Business Banking umbrella. Later this year, holders of the Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Card will be able to redeem Reward Dollars directly into a Business Checking account, and early next year Amex will add a payroll solution built on Gusto with AI-generated payroll insights folded into Business Checking. Deposit accounts are issued through American Express National Bank, an FDIC member.
“Businesses are looking for more value from their banking services, including competitive returns and simple tools that help them automate processes and fit seamlessly into how they operate,” said Eva Reda, Executive Vice President of Global Commercial Services at American Express. “With Amex Business Banking, businesses now have banking tools that make it easy and rewarding to manage their finances, all in one place.”
The original insight is in the bundling, not the yield. A 2.95% APY is competitive but not category-leading against neobank and fintech alternatives already targeting small business owners, including the UK spend platform Ramp recently brought to new markets. What Amex is selling instead is consolidation: card rewards that convert into deposits, payroll wired into the checking account, and one application for the whole relationship, the same bundling logic behind how banks elsewhere are buying digital scale rather than building single products. For a small business owner already carrying an Amex card, the switching cost to a standalone neobank just went up.
